A sandstone patio can look premium for years, or start moving, staining and holding water within a single winter. The difference usually comes down to the groundwork. If you want to lay sandstone patio correctly, the slabs themselves are only part of the job - the base, mortar bed, drainage and jointing all matter just as much.

Indian sandstone remains one of the most popular choices for UK gardens because it balances character, durability and value. It suits traditional spaces, contemporary schemes and everything in between. But sandstone is a natural product, so it needs to be installed with care if you want a clean finish and long-term performance.

What matters before you lay sandstone patio correctly

The biggest mistake on patio projects is treating sandstone like a decorative surface rather than a construction job. A good-looking patio starts below ground level. If the sub-base is weak or the levels are wrong, no amount of careful slab laying will fix it later.

Start by checking your finished height against door thresholds, air bricks and surrounding ground levels. You need enough depth for the full build-up, including sub-base, bedding mortar and slab thickness. In most domestic patio projects, that means excavating more than first-time installers expect.

Drainage also needs planning from the outset. A patio should fall away from the property so surface water does not sit against walls or pool on the paving. To lay sandstone patio correctly, each slab should be installed on a full wet mortar bed, not on isolated dabs or patches. Spot bedding leaves voids beneath the slab, which can trap water and create weak points. Over time that often leads to cracked paving, loose slabs or staining issues.

A typical bedding mortar mix for patios is sharp sand and cement, mixed to a workable consistency that supports the slab without becoming too wet. The bed should be thick enough to allow adjustment and achieve good contact. The aim is full coverage under the slab, with no hollow sections.

Natural sandstone should also be primed on the underside before laying. A suitable slurry primer helps the slab bond properly to the mortar bed, which is especially important with natural stone. Skipping primer can reduce adhesion and increase the risk of movement. This is a small step that makes a big difference.

How to lay sandstone patio correctly, slab by slab

Once your base and mortar are ready, begin laying from a straight reference edge or corner. Work methodically and keep checking your lines. Even the most attractive sandstone will look poor if the pattern drifts or the joints vary too much.

Lower each slab onto the full mortar bed after applying primer to the back. Tap it down gently with a rubber mallet and check the level in more than one direction. You are looking for a patio that is flat to the eye while still following the planned fall for drainage. Those are not the same thing, so keep checking both.

Joint widths should remain consistent across the patio. With calibrated sandstone, that is easier to achieve. With hand-cut or naturally varied stone, you may need to work more carefully to balance the joint lines and maintain the overall pattern. It is worth dry planning the layout before mixing too much mortar, especially on mixed-size patio packs.

Do not push slabs tightly together. Proper joints are essential for stability, appearance and pointing performance. Very narrow gaps can make jointing difficult, while overly wide joints can look untidy and weaken the finished design.

Getting levels, falls and layout right

There is usually a trade-off between following the natural variation of sandstone and achieving a perfectly uniform finish. Natural stone often includes slight differences in riven texture, edges and tone. That variation is part of the appeal, but it means the installer needs to make sensible visual judgements rather than rely on measurements alone.

Stand back regularly and check the patio from different angles. A slab that reads level on a spirit level may still look proud if the surrounding stone has a different texture or edge profile. Equally, chasing absolute perfection on every individual slab can sometimes disrupt the broader fall across the patio.

The best result is usually one that balances practical drainage with a visually even surface. Water must run off effectively, but the patio should still feel comfortable underfoot and look consistent from the house and garden.

Pointing should only be done once the bedding mortar has cured enough and the slabs are secure. The right jointing product depends on the patio, weather conditions and intended use. Brush-in compounds can be convenient for many domestic jobs, while traditional pointing methods may suit other installations better.

Sandstone can mark during installation if slurry, cement or dirt is allowed to sit on the face of the slab. Clean as you go and avoid leaving mess to dry. Some installers also choose to seal sandstone after the patio has fully cured and dried, but this depends on the look you want and the product you are using. Sealing can help with maintenance in some cases, but it is not a substitute for proper installation.

Weather matters too. Laying sandstone in heavy rain, frost or very poor site conditions can compromise both the bedding and the finish. Sometimes the right decision is to wait for a better day rather than force progress and create problems that are costly to put right.
