What Base for Patio Slabs Works Best in UK Gardens?

A patio can look perfectly level on installation day and still start rocking, sinking or holding puddles after its first winter. The answer to what base for patio slabs is not simply ‘sand’ or ‘concrete’. For most UK patios, the reliable approach is a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base topped with a full mortar bed, built on properly prepared ground with suitable drainage.

The exact depth and method depend on your soil, the patio’s location, the slab material and whether the area will carry anything heavier than garden furniture. Getting the base right is where a long-lasting patio is made - the slabs are only as stable as the layers beneath them.

What base for patio slabs should you use?

For a standard pedestrian patio, use a layered construction: firm subgrade, compacted granular sub-base, then a mortar bedding layer beneath every slab. This gives the paving a stable, even foundation while allowing you to set accurate levels and falls.

A typical build-up is 100mm to 150mm of compacted MOT Type 1, followed by a 30mm to 40mm full mortar bed. The final excavation depth must also allow for the thickness of your chosen slabs. A 20mm porcelain slab, for example, needs less allowance than a 22mm calibrated sandstone slab, but both still need a sound base.

Do not lay patio slabs directly onto soil, loose gravel or a thin layer of sharp sand. These methods may seem quicker, but they provide poor support. Ground movement, water and repeated foot traffic can soon leave uneven joints and unstable paving.

The subgrade: the ground beneath the base

The subgrade is the exposed natural ground at the bottom of your excavation. Remove turf, roots, topsoil and any soft or organic material until you reach firm ground. Topsoil is not a suitable foundation because it retains moisture and compresses over time.

If the soil is soft, clay-heavy or has been disturbed by previous building work, excavate a little deeper and improve the foundation before adding Type 1. A geotextile membrane can be useful where the ground is particularly weak or prone to mixing with the sub-base. It separates the soil from the aggregate, helping the layers stay distinct and reducing the risk of sinking.

Clay gardens deserve particular care. Clay expands when wet and contracts as it dries, so good compaction and effective drainage matter even more. On firm, well-draining ground, a standard sub-base depth is often enough. On softer ground, increasing the compacted sub-base to around 150mm is the safer option.

MOT Type 1: the main load-bearing layer

MOT Type 1 is a graded crushed aggregate made up of stone particles and fines. When compacted, the fines lock the larger particles together to create a dense, stable layer. This is why it is preferred for patio foundations over decorative gravel or all-in ballast.

Lay Type 1 in layers no deeper than about 75mm, then compact each layer with a plate compactor before adding the next. Trying to compact 150mm in one pass often leaves loose material lower down, even if the surface looks firm. Take time around edges and corners, where a plate compactor can miss areas.

For a patio used only by people, 100mm of compacted Type 1 is usually suitable on sound ground. Choose 150mm where soils are weak, where the patio will support a hot tub, outdoor kitchen or heavy planters, or where you want extra reassurance in a high-use area. A patio is not a driveway, however. Areas intended for vehicles need a design that accounts for much greater loading.

Why a full mortar bed is better than laying on sand

Once the Type 1 is level, compacted and formed to the correct fall, the slabs should be laid on a full bed of mortar. A common mix is four parts sharp sand to one part cement, mixed to a workable but not overly wet consistency. The mortar bed should support the whole underside of the slab, not just its corners or centre.

Dot-and-dab laying - placing separate blobs of mortar under a slab - should be avoided. It leaves unsupported voids that can lead to cracked paving, drummy sounds underfoot and water collecting beneath the surface. Full bedding distributes weight evenly and makes it much easier to achieve a stable finish.

For natural stone, a full mortar bed helps accommodate slight variations in slab thickness. Indian sandstone can have natural variation even when calibrated, so check levels regularly with a long spirit level and use the mortar bed to make fine adjustments.

Porcelain paving needs the same full-bed support, but it also needs a suitable porcelain primer applied to the clean underside of each slab. Porcelain is dense and has very low water absorption, so ordinary mortar alone may not form a dependable bond. Priming slurry improves adhesion and reduces the chance of slabs becoming loose over time.

A concrete slab base can also be appropriate in certain settings, especially where an existing sound concrete base is already present. It must be stable, free from major cracks and formed with drainage in mind. Even then, patio slabs are normally laid on a mortar bed rather than bonded straight onto dry concrete. A concrete base is not automatically better than a correctly installed Type 1 foundation, and it can make future alterations more difficult.

Build drainage into the base, not after the patio is laid

Water should drain away from your house and other buildings. Form a gentle fall into the sub-base and carry it through the bedding layer and paving surface. As a guide, aim for a fall of at least 1:80 - roughly 12.5mm per metre. Some installations may need a slightly steeper fall depending on the paving texture, local exposure and drainage route.

The fall must lead somewhere sensible: a lawn, border, gravel drainage area or an appropriate drainage channel. Do not direct surface water towards a neighbour’s property or allow it to sit against an exterior wall. Where a patio meets a property, keep the finished surface below the damp-proof course, typically by at least 150mm, unless the building design and drainage arrangement have been professionally assessed.

Drainage channels are particularly useful beside bi-fold doors, low thresholds and patios with limited natural run-off. Plan them before excavation, as their outlet and height affect the whole construction level.

How deep should you dig for a patio base?

For a typical 20mm patio slab laid on a 30mm to 40mm mortar bed and 100mm compacted Type 1 sub-base, allow around 170mm to 190mm from finished paving level to the excavated ground. You may need more depth for 150mm of sub-base, thicker natural stone, poor ground or a drainage channel.

Before digging, establish the finished height of the patio. This avoids a frequent problem: excavating to an arbitrary depth, then finding the patio ends up too high against the property or too low against the lawn. Use string lines, pegs and a level to mark the planned surface and fall first, then work down from that point.

Remember that Type 1 reduces in depth as it compacts. Ordering and laying the material loose to the exact final depth will leave you short once it has been consolidated. Allow for compaction and order enough material for the full area.

Edging and joints help the base perform

A patio needs a restrained perimeter. Edge restraints, such as kerbs, setts or securely bedded border units, prevent the paving from creeping outwards and help maintain neat joint lines. They should be installed on a firm mortar or concrete footing, not simply pressed into loose aggregate.

Jointing is also part of the finished system. Once the mortar has cured sufficiently, use a paving joint compound or grout suited to your slab type and joint width. Porcelain and natural stone often require different products, so check compatibility before buying. Good jointing reduces weed growth and limits surface water getting down between the slabs, but it cannot compensate for a weak base below.

Common patio base mistakes to avoid

The most expensive mistakes are usually hidden beneath the paving. Avoid laying Type 1 over turf or topsoil, skipping compaction, using a few mortar dabs instead of full bedding, and ignoring the fall away from the house. Another common issue is mixing materials without a plan, such as using building sand beneath slabs or using decorative gravel as a structural sub-base.

It is also worth checking every few slabs as you work rather than relying on the first row. Levels can drift across a wide patio, especially when laying mixed-size sandstone or large-format porcelain. A long straightedge will show low spots that a short spirit level may miss.
